Parahyangan is the ancient Sunda name for the mountainous region in West Java which translates to "abode of the gods". The hyang are revered gods, supernatural beings, and revered ancestors.

The oral traditions of Urang Sundathe Sundanese peoplestretch back to the late Paleolithic. Sundanese culture has endured successive waves of syncretism. It has been both influenced by and adapted new cultures, so that modern Sundanese cultures remain distinctly Sundanese. And Sunda Wiwitan, the oldest known Sundanese religion is still practised by a diminishing but persistent minority.

This project is driven by the desire to help my children learn about the parts of their Sundanese heritage that are gradually being erased by the pressures of the modern world and a unified Indonesian national identity. Very little of the source material is available in English and quite a lot of it is only preserved by very small minorities or academics.

A consequence of this purpose is the amount of cultural material included in this series. It is difficult to convey cultural nuance that will allow for better cultural engagement during play in the pithy style typical of Mausritter. Most of this cultural material will be contained in setting guides like this one. Zines with locations sites, etc., will be more in line with the minimalist standards of Mausritter.

Parahyangan Peregrinations is a setting guide for the Sundanese themed Mausantara modules. It's optional, but highly recommended to use this guide in conjunction with the other modules.
